blufiggs asked: How many revisions, if any, do you do when it comes to your writing? especially fiction. i find when writing fiction i keep finding better ways to progress the plot or get new ideas that have me deleting entire sections. how do you decide enough is enough?

frogkunlit:

It depends an awful lot on the purpose and importance I place on the writing. I revise my academic work heavily, for instance.

As for fiction, I don’t tend to revise major scenes or plot beats very much. I spend a lot of time thinking about exactly what I want each scene to achieve before I start writing it. When I revise, I focus more on word choice and flow.

It’s easy to get caught up revising things over and over again, but eventually you lose the rawness of your vision. So if you ever feel unsatisfied with your editing, I recommend you put some distance between yourself and your work. Read it again later and think about how clearly the overall vision comes across. That’s the most important thing.
