Better quality screencaps from Little Witch Academia.
The Law of Manga.

I think is a pretty cool Kickstarter. You all should go and fund it so we can get a longer trailer and hopefully a better movie.

You know, as somebody who has spent his entire life as a geek, enjoying science fiction, fantasy, comic books, and feeling like an outcast because of my enthusiasm for such things, there’s something about the “geek girl” concept that really irks me.
Mostly, the way some folks have been treating…
Basically everything this man says.
I was going to add commentary about ladies but reread the post and realized HE ALREADY SAID WHAT I WANTED. Ahhh, so beautiful.
The idea that you have to measure up to some kind of “geek standard” to be a proper “geek” is complete crap anyway. I hate it: that posturing attitude that, well, I’m more geeky than you because of x, y, and z, so your opinion is worthless and you should work harder to get on my level.
You don’t have to pass a test to be a fan of a thing. You don’t have to be the best at video games to enjoy video games. You can still be an anime fan even if you think Monster was dull and you just want to watch moe girls prance around in K-on! some more. You don’t have to read blog posts and engage in serious discussion of the medium to be worth something. Even people who write those awful MAL reviews or post in the forums every single day deserve to be able to express an opinion, but I see my peers treat them like they are the scum of the earth every single day.
It grates on my nerves more than anything else when I see people trying to out-geek other people. And so many geeks do this, especially online. I see it on Twitter, I see it on Tumblr, I see it on every single subreddit (even the cooking ones sometimes)—it’s a tragedy. I thought a part of being a geek was trying to escape that idea that you have to do everything the “cool kids” do to be accepted in society. But then you enter “geek society” and it’s just as bad. If you aren’t as knowledgeable or you aren’t as die-hard of a fan then your opinion doesn’t count—come back later.
I hate it.
ok monster wasn’t dull mef you take that back.
but seriously, if people are worried about their precious “geek culture” being co-opted by the cool kids then I have some thoughts
- you’re probably worried that those cool kids will in turn accuse you of being a johnny-come-lately yourself, because you’ve been a nerd long enough to know that you’ll never end up on the top of the social totem pole. get over it. you want a badge of authenticity? it’s the fact that you’re a loser. bam. you’re the UR-NERD. thank me later.
- if you’re worried about girls being nerds (and let’s face it, this thing seems to keep coming up because of supposed “poseur geek girls”) because girls made fun of you when you were a kid, remember a lot of these girl nerds went through that too. some of them might be cute now and that makes them horrible cheerleaders in your head but they may not have always been that cute, just like it took you some time to get that fat. some may have gone through being cute but not being normal. you’ll never know because you don’t wash and you’re a scumbag, but that’s rough too.
- if nothing you love has ever been co-opted, then I guess at least you’ve never had that feeling of looking at an identical row of identically-fake-faded Operation Ivy shirts at the Urban Outfitters in the mall. Good on you.
this thing needs to go to bed. Good linked post though.
FACT: Real geeks don’t call themselves geeks. They call themselves real geeks.
Oh and I hate geek culture. Just let it die or something already. There are too many geeks these days to form any all-encompassing cohesive group. Just go and have fun enjoying stuff and take joy in the joy of others or something cheesy like that.
