Clint Barton was grinning from ear to ear when he left his Defense Against the Dark Arts class. After several long and frustrating weeks, he had finally produced a corporeal Patronus. Natasha wouldn’t be able to tease him about it anymore, especially since the form his Patronus took was so much more impressive than her measly spider.
His hawk followed him, soaring silently overhead as he made his way towards the Great Hall for lunch, and he turned several heads as he jumped eagerly down the stairs.
“Hey! Barton!”
It was not loud, but it was a strict, commanding sort of voice. He stopped. Phil Coulson was coming up behind him, looking somewhat stern. Either his prefect badge was extra shiny today or it just glowed whenever he performed prefect-relevant duties.
“No magic in the halls,” Phil said. “You know that.“
Clint grinned sheepishly. “I’m not! I cast it in the classroom. Isn’t my fault it’s still around.” The hawk landed on his head and glared fiercely at the other Hufflepuff, though Clint wasn’t sure it had any other expression aside from ‘fierce’.
Phil continued to look strict, but his eyes betrayed a smile. “Your first corporeal Patronus, is it?“
"Yes, sir,” Clint said. It was probably obvious. He was in trouble, but he couldn’t stop grinning. “Isn’t yours a bird too? What kind?“ Maybe throwing the focus off of himself would help. “Can I see it?”
Phil seemed to consider this. He looked around. The halls were almost empty now. “Expecto Patronum,” the prefect said, almost matter-of-factly. White light gathered at the tip of his wand and blinded Clint for a moment.
When he opened his eyes, a large ostrich-like creature stood before him, and before he could even fully taken in what it was, he was laughing. He couldn’t help it. The animal looked ridiculous.
“Is that a bird??” he asked incredulously. “Could it even fly??“
Phil’s Patronus glared at him with a fierceness that rivaled his own hawk’s. It was silent, but then, without warning, it rushed at him, taking several quick steps forward and stopping right in front of him, beak prepared to take a stab at his face. In the back of his head, Clint knew that the Patronus could not hurt him. It was a manifestation of good and positive energy. It looked solid, but it would pass through him. And yet, in that moment, he became suddenly aware of the sharpness of its beak and the largeness of its clawed feet and he fell backwards in surprise.
Phil Coulson was smiling openly now, though it was an understated, thin smile. “A bird doesn’t need to fly to be dangerous,” he said.
Clint stared at the cassowary. It was still glaring back at him. Slowly, he stood up, as if trying not to provoke it into attacking him again. As he did so, his own Patronus disappeared, fading into light wisps of smoke before vanishing altogether.
“Well, then,” Phil said, still smiling. He pocketed his wand and his cassowary turned away from Clint, also disappearing. “No magic in the halls, Barton. Don’t let me catch you again.“
Clint nodded stupidly and watched him turn and continue down to the Great Hall.
